As part of our ongoing Safety theme we have been practicing our fire and earthquake evacuation drills at school. Last Friday we were lucky enough to be visited by the local fire department. They observed our evacuation procedure and gave us some helpful tips. The teachers practiced using fire extinguishers. Then we all had a turn sitting in the fire engine! We all really enjoyed their visit. Thank you fire fighters!
For our 2nd Artist Appreciation program of this year, we introduced Paul Dukas and his “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. This composition is well-known by the Disney Movie, Fantasia, and well fits for the season of Halloween.
The composition title we intorduced was, L’Apprenti Sorcier (English: The Sorcerer’s Apprentice) (1897), which is based on Goethe’s poem ”Der Zauberlehrling”.
The kids were introduced to the words, orchestra, composer, conductor, and some instruments in the video clip such as violin, bassoon and french horn.
Children listened at the carpet the first time with their eyes closed and were asked to imagine ghosts, monsters, witches and other spooky Halloween things.

The children were then given black construction paper and colourful oil pastels. The teacher asked each student what the music made them think of, the played the music a second time while they drew their interpretation of the music.
When each child completed their artwork, they were asked to talk about the picture and describe what was happening, The teacher wrote down their responses to be displayed later with their artwork.
A while ago, students in TIPS had received a package from their pen pal friends in the United States (here). They are sending their letter with drawing back to them with some goodies (photo). In this modern world of e-mails, it is still good to exchange written letters that promotes writing and make aware of the other part of the world where other children are also enjoying their school life.
Children sighed thank you card to neighbors thanking their coopereation for trick-or-treat on Halloween Party day. Writing thank you card is a good habit that we wish everyone carry forward for the rest of their lives.
Diwali is a Festival of Lights and is celebrated by Hindus in India and all around the world in October or November. It is the Hindu New Year and is either a 3-day or 5-day holiday depending on where you come from.
Children made a Rangoli, colourful geometric designs created near the entrance of the house to welcome guests at Diwali.
It was a lot of fun! Children enjoyed fashion show, halloween games, stroies, songs, and crafts. Most of all, “real” trick-or-treat visiting neighbors (pre-arranged for safety reason). Parents joined to the group to parade to the park near-by.
Look at all these smily faces! Children surely enjoyed making these cookies having smiles just like these. All cookies are saved for the party tomorrow.
